Know How Important First Aid Is In Mental Health?

We all witnessed friends and loved ones going through difficult times, but sometimes we witness a developing mental health problem or a health crisis. Just in case during these times, we can learn to provide what is known as "mental health first aid".

Mental health first aid is the help you give to people who are developing a mental health problem, are experiencing a worsening mental health problem, or are going through a mental health crisis. You can do this first aid until the person receives appropriate professional treatment or the crisis has been resolved.

Mental health first aid can help people experiencing a recession, worry problem, psychosis, stimulant use problem, Eating disorder, or gambling problems.

It can also be helpful if a person is going through a mental health crisis, such as suicidal thoughts and behaviour, non-suicidal self-harm (sometimes called intentional self-harm), panic attacks, traumatic event, serious mental state, severe effects of alcohol or other drug use, and aggressive behaviours.

You learn the risk factors and warning signs for addiction and mental health problems, strategies for helping someone in crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to find help. You can also take a course specifically for people you know and work with.

How to use First Aid In Mental Health?

Mental Health First Aid training will allow you to gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to assist someone who has developed a mental health problem or who is going through a mental health crisis. But even without training, you can still support those around you.

With nearly one in five adults in the United States living with a mental illness, understanding how to help them is more important than ever. Fortunately, there is an educational program called Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) designed to teach participants valuable lessons to help these individuals.

MHFA explains how to recognize the signs of a mental health problem, provide initial help, and connect individuals to appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help services.

What Does It Include?

With evidence-based programs specifically designed for adults, youth, carers, veterans, law enforcement, EMS personnel, school teachers and more, there is a course on first aid in mental health for anyone. Course participants also learn about common risk factors and warning signs for specific illnesses, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

MFHA prepares participants to interact with someone in crisis and connects them to help. It's important to note that "First Aiders" do not take on the role of professionals - they do not diagnose or offer advice or therapy.
